A thematic map represents data by applying shading, color coding or proportional symbols. The type of thematic map created is determined by data type. The USAID Nigeria Data Management System GIS Module is able to create the following types of thematic maps.

Graduated Color Maps Used when data values
are numeric and relate to geographic areas, e.g. state, local government
Data is divided into distinct ranges. Each
data range is represented by a color or pattern
Number of cases per state, local government
Dot Density Used when data values
are numeric and relate to geographic areas, e.g. state, local government
Data is represented by randomly distributed points in an area. Each
dot represents a user definable value
Density of population per administrative level, with each dot representing 500 people
Value Map Used when data values
are Boolean (1 or 0, True/False), or unique names and relate to geographic areas
A different color is used
to symbolize a different value for each
geographic area
Red = endemic
Blue = not endemic
Single Symbol Map Used when data values
are unique and relate to geographic points that
are mapped
When all features in a layer are drawn with the same symbol Health care center as a cross, a case as a red dot
Graduated Symbol Map Used when data values
are numeric and relate
to geographic points
Data is divided into distinct ranges. Each
data range is represented proportionally in size by a point
Number of inhabitants per village/Number of cases per facility
