A GPS handheld receiver only receives radio signals, but does not transmit. The receiver's primary function is to locate your CURRENT POSITION anywhere on the planet. Typically, this can be accomplished to an accuracy of perhaps 6 to 8 meters with 95% certainty depending on weather conditions. Additionally, some models have built-in (or uploadable) maps that indicate your current position on the map.
